Loose, spontaneous reinterpretations of classic albums recorded in a single day. Raw indie energy meets high-concept experimental play.
Listening to Record Club feels like being a fly on the wall during the most interesting jam session of the decade. There is a palpable sense of urgency and discovery in every track, born from the project's strict rule of recording an entire album in just twenty-four hours. The sound is intentionally unpolished, capturing the creak of chairs, the tentative first takes, and the sudden sparks of brilliance when a group of master musicians finds a new angle on a familiar melody.
What makes this project distinctive is the collision of high-profile talent with a low-stakes, experimental environment. You might hear Beck's signature deadpan delivery layered over St. Vincent's jagged guitar work or MGMT's synth textures, all applied to songs you thought you knew by heart. It strips away the preciousness of the 'classic album' and replaces it with a gritty, human vitality that feels both respectful and rebellious.
Start with their take on 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' to hear how they navigate the tension between iconic source material and their own chaotic energy. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the process of creation as much as the finished product. From there, move to 'Oar' for a more fragile, folk-leaning experience that showcases the project's emotional range.
Record Club was a musical project initiated by Beck in June 2009. The purpose of the project was to cover an entire album by another artist in one day, using an informal and fluid collective of musicians. Albums covered were The Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico, Leonard Cohen's Songs of Leonard Cohen, Skip Spence's Oar, INXS's Kick, and Yanni's Yanni Live at the Acropolis. Video footage of every performance has been made available on Beck's website.
