Red Zebra is a foundational pillar of the Belgian post-punk and New Wave scene, emerging from Bruges in 1979. Originally formed as The Bungalows, the quartet quickly pivoted to a sharper, more sophisticated sound that would define the 'Belpop' era.
Their 1980 hit 'I Can't Live in a Living Room' is a seminal work of European punk, blending a catchy, repetitive bass hook with a critique of middle-class stagnation. This track alone secured their place in the cult canon, later appearing in international cinema and influencing a new generation of darkwave and post-punk revivalists like Whispering Sons. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the band navigated various line-up changes and hiatuses, but consistently maintained a sound characterized by angular guitars and Slabbynck's distinctive vocals. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the aggressive DIY spirit of 77 punk and the atmospheric, synth-touched gloom of the 80s cold wave movement.
