Rehab emerged from Warner Robins, Georgia, in the late 1990s as a trio consisting of Danny 'Boone' Alexander, Jason 'Brooks' Buford, and Steaknife. Their sound was a pioneering hybrid of Southern hip-hop and alternative rock, predating the massive commercial explosion of 'hick-hop' but maintaining a more introspective, alternative edge.
Their 2000 major-label debut, Southern Discomfort, established them as a critical anomaly: a rap group that could tour with Linkin Park on the Warped Tour while collaborating with Cee-Lo Green and Cody Chestnutt. The departure of Buford led to a hiatus and a subsequent rebirth as a full band led by Boone, which shifted the sound toward a more organic, guitar-driven aesthetic. Their cultural legacy is anchored by 'The Bartender Song,' a track that achieved the rare feat of charting across Modern Rock, Hot 100, and Country formats. Critically, they are viewed as precursors to the genre-blurring styles of artists like Jelly Roll, blending themes of addiction, blue-collar struggle, and Southern identity with a sophisticated melodic sense that transcends the rap-rock label.
