Intro

Rennie Pilgrem’s music is the sound of a city that refuses to sleep. It is built on the foundation of the breakbeat, but it carries a weight and a polish that distinguishes it from the raw chaos of early rave. You can hear the ghosts of jazz in the way the rhythms swing and the occasional saxophone flourish cuts through the digital fog. It is muscular, rhythmic, and deeply funky, favoring complex syncopation over the four-to-the-floor monotony of standard house.

What makes Pilgrem truly distinctive is his role as a bridge between eras. He takes the frantic energy of 90s hardcore and slows it down just enough to let the groove breathe, injecting it with high-fidelity production and sophisticated harmonic choices. There is a specific 'TCR' label sound here: crisp drums, rolling basslines, and a sense of forward motion that feels both calculated and wild.

Start with 'A Place Called Acid' to understand the blueprint of the genre, then move into his later albums like 'Coming Up for Air' to see how he refined that energy into a sleek, cinematic electronic experience. It is essential listening for anyone who finds standard techno too rigid and drum and bass too fast.

Rennie Pilgrem is an English electronic music producer. He is often considered responsible for the creation of the nu skool breaks genre. Before moving into breaks, Pilgrem was part of the influential rave group Rhythm Section along with Richie T, Ellis Dee and Nick Newton. Pilgrem is also the boss of Thursday Club Recordings a.k.a. TCR, a label which he founded in 1993, which has released material by B.L.I.M., Koma & Bones, Chris Carter, 2Sinners, Vigi, JDS, General Midi, Arthur Baker, Dopamine, Elite Force, Überzone and Meat Katie. Since 2010, he switched his focus to visual art. In 2013, he was selected for the Royal Academy Summer exhibition. He now devotes his time making paintings, original prints and uses his previous electronic experience to crest cutting-edge digital work too. He has shown his work with The Other Art Fair in London and is also working with galleries both in England and abroad.
