Repulsion

Raw, primitive, and punishingly fast. This is the blueprint for grindcore, delivered with a distorted bass tone and a relentless, blood-soaked energy.

Intro

Listening to Repulsion feels like being caught in a high-speed collision between a punk show and a low-budget 80s slasher flick. The sound is famously unrefined, characterized by a thick, buzzing bass tone that sounds like a chainsaw idling in a metal bucket. The drums are the real engine here, pioneering the frantic blast beats that would define extreme metal for decades to come, yet they retain a loose, human swing that keeps the music from feeling mechanical.

What makes them distinctive is the sheer economy of their violence. Most tracks barely clear the sixty-second mark, stripping away all pretense of traditional song structure in favor of a singular, explosive idea. The production is famously 'primitive,' but that lack of polish is exactly what gives the music its terrifying, immediate power. It sounds less like a studio recording and more like a captured document of a band trying to play faster than their instruments will allow.

Start with the 1989 masterpiece 'Horrified.' It is the definitive statement of their career and the foundational text for goregrind and grindcore. Every track is a masterclass in how to be heavy without being bloated, making it the perfect entry point for anyone wanting to understand where the most extreme corners of modern metal began.

Repulsion is an American grindcore band from Flint, Michigan, founded in 1984 by Scott Carlson and Matt Olivo. The band underwent many name changes before eventually settling on Repulsion after Carlson and Olivo left Death in the mid-1980s, recruiting Dave "Grave" Hollingshead as their drummer. The band subsequently recorded their debut album Horrified in 1986, releasing it three years later. The band has been cited as an influence on numerous bands since its initial run, including Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death.
