High-octane psychobilly that hits like a shot of cheap whiskey. Slapped bass, surf-punk guitar, and wild barroom stories for the fast lane.
The Reverend Horton Heat sounds like a 1950s greaser gang crashing a 1980s punk show. It is the sonic equivalent of a hot rod engine screaming at redline: dangerous, loud, and undeniably cool. The music is anchored by the percussive, rhythmic thwack of a slapped upright bass and the shimmering, feedback-prone twang of a Gretsch guitar, creating a sound that is both vintage and visceral.
What truly sets the Reverend apart is the technical precision hidden beneath the chaos. Jim Heath is a guitar virtuoso who can pivot from Chet Atkins-style fingerpicking to blistering surf-punk shredding in a single measure. The lyrics lean into a cartoonish, hyper-masculine Americana, filled with odes to fast cars, heavy drinking, and the devil, all delivered with a knowing, satirical wink that keeps the energy light despite the intensity.
Start with 'Holy Roller' to get the full spectrum of their power. It captures the band at their most iconic, blending the humor of 'Baddest of the Bad' with the sheer instrumental terror of 'Psychobilly Freakout.' It is the perfect entry point for anyone who wants their rock and roll served with a side of adrenaline and a dash of Texas grit.
The Reverend Horton Heat is the stage name of American musician James C. Heath (born 1959) as well as the name of his psychobilly trio from Dallas. Heath is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. A reviewer for the magazine Prick called Heath the "godfather of modern rockabilly and psychobilly". The group formed in 1986, playing its first gigs in Dallas' Deep Ellum neighborhood. The core members are Jim "Reverend Horton" Heath on guitars and lead vocals, and Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass. The band signed to Victory Records in 2012, and released its 12th studio album, Whole New Life, on November 30, 2018. The band plays rock and roll with influences from 1950s country music, surf music, punk, big band, swing, and rockabilly standards.
