Intricate woodwinds and period instruments meeting modern cinematic scale. Sophisticated, historically-informed music for deep focus and grand imagination.
Richard Harvey creates music that feels like a bridge between a medieval scriptorium and a modern film stage. His sound is defined by an incredible technical mastery of woodwinds, particularly the recorder and various folk instruments, which he treats with the same gravity as a full symphony orchestra. It is organic, highly detailed, and possesses a rare clarity that makes every plucked string and breathy reed feel intentional and close.
What sets him apart is his background in the 'mediaevalist' progressive rock of Gryphon, which gives his classical compositions a rhythmic curiosity and textural richness often missing from more academic works. He doesn't just write for instruments; he understands their historical soul, blending ancient timbres with the sweeping, emotional demands of modern storytelling. It is music that respects the past while functioning perfectly in the present.
For those new to his work, the 'Concerto Antico' is the essential starting point. It showcases his ability to write melodies that feel like they have existed for centuries, performed with a crisp, modern production that highlights the interplay between the guitar and the orchestra.
