Riff was the primary vehicle for Norberto 'Pappo' Napolitano's transition from blues-rock icon to the father of Argentine heavy metal. Formed in 1980 following the dissolution of Pappo's Blues, the band was a direct response to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, specifically drawing influence from AC/DC, Motörhead, and Saxon.
Their debut, 'Ruedas de metal', signaled a hard shift in the Argentine musical landscape, moving away from the 'acusticazo' folk-rock trends toward a more aggressive, urban sound. Throughout the early 80s, Riff became synonymous with a tough, working-class identity, often attracting a volatile following that mirrored the social tensions of the era. The lineup, featuring stalwarts like Vitico and Moro, provided a virtuosic yet heavy foundation for Pappo's signature soloing. Despite several hiatuses and lineup changes, including the notable addition of JAF, the band remained the gold standard for 'Rock Pesado' in the Spanish-speaking world until Pappo's death in 2005. They are critically regarded as the bridge between 70s rock and the 90s metal explosion in South America.
