Ritualz, the project of Mexico City-based producer JC Lobo, is a cornerstone of the witch house movement that emerged in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Known for the iconic †‡† symbol, Lobo was instrumental in defining the genre's aesthetic: a blend of chopped and screwed hip-hop rhythms, dark ambient drones, and industrial textures.
His early work, particularly the 'Ghetto Ass Witch' era, is characterized by a lo-fi, murky production style that prioritized atmosphere over clarity, often incorporating occult and horror-film imagery. As the initial witch house hype dissipated, Ritualz proved his longevity by evolving into a more structured darkwave and industrial project. His later releases, such as 'Doom' and 'RADICAL MACABRO', showcase a shift toward higher production values, more aggressive synth-work, and a clearer lineage to EBM and post-punk. Through his label Maligna, Lobo continues to be a central figure in the global dark electronic underground, maintaining a cult following by refusing to dilute his uncompromisingly bleak and ritualistic sound.
