Robert Randolph & The Family Band

High-octane gospel-funk driven by lightning-fast pedal steel guitar. It is the sound of a Sunday morning service crashing into a Saturday night festival stage.

Intro

Imagine a church revival meeting that suddenly breaks out into a psychedelic funk jam. The sound is dominated by the pedal steel guitar, an instrument usually reserved for country ballads, but here it is played with the ferocity of Jimi Hendrix and the rhythmic precision of a Hammond organ. It is bright, brassy, and relentlessly positive, anchored by a rhythm section that favors deep, pocket-heavy grooves.

What makes this music truly distinctive is the 'Sacred Steel' technique. Instead of the slow, weeping slides typical of the instrument, you get rapid-fire runs, vocal-like wah-wah effects, and a percussive attack that mimics a human voice in mid-shout. The interplay between the soaring steel and the thick, church-informed organ creates a wall of sound that feels both ancient and modern.

Start with the album 'Colorblind' to hear the band at their most accessible and rock-leaning. It captures the transition from their jam-band roots into a more structured, soulful sound while keeping the improvisational fire that makes their live shows legendary.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band is an American gospel band led by pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph (Robert Jermaine Randolph, born August 8, 1977, Irvington, New Jersey). NPR has described the band as one with an "irresistible rock 'n' roll swagger". Rolling Stone included Randolph upon their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. The band has released six studio albums and has been Grammy nominated five times, winning the 2026 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for the album Preachers Kids.
