Swirling, psychedelic blues rock with a heavy, liquid guitar tone. Deeply atmospheric power trio sounds that feel like midnight on a foggy coastline.
Robin Trower creates a sonic world that feels submerged and ethereal. While rooted in the blues, his music moves with a slow, tidal pull that sets it apart from the standard bar-room shuffle. It is heavy, but not in a metallic sense; rather, it possesses a gravitational weight, anchored by a thick, swirling guitar tone that seems to hang in the air long after the notes are struck.
What truly distinguishes Trower is his mastery of space and texture. Using a signature combination of Univibe and heavy amplification, he transforms the electric guitar into a liquid instrument. His solos aren't just displays of speed, but explorations of resonance and feedback, often supported by the soulful, gospel-tinged vocals of James Dewar, which provide a human warmth to the psychedelic haze.
For the uninitiated, the 1974 masterpiece Bridge of Sighs is the essential entry point. It captures the perfect balance of his Hendrix-inspired fluidity and a dark, brooding atmosphere that remains unique in the classic rock canon. It is music designed for deep listening, rewarding those who let the atmosphere wash over them.
Robin Leonard Trower (born 9 March 1945) is an English rock guitarist and producer who achieved success with Procol Harum from 1967 until 1971 and as the bandleader of his own power trio known as the Robin Trower Band. Although Procol Harum was primarily known as a progressive rock band, Trower himself is known for his blues-infused guitar playing, which critics have frequently compared to that of Jimi Hendrix, whom he has cited as an influence. As a solo artist, Trower released four consecutive gold-certified albums from 1974 to 1977 that charted well in the US and Canada, but in the 1980s his career faltered. He briefly returned to Procol Harum for their 1991 reunion album, The Prodigal Stranger, but left again to resume his solo career. His most recent solo album, Come and Find Me, was released in 2025.
