Root

Root is a foundational pillar of the Czech extreme metal scene, formed in Brno in 1987. Led by the charismatic and controversial Big Boss (Jiří Valter), the band was instrumental in defining the first wave of black metal alongside acts like Master's Hammer.

However, Root's trajectory is unique; they moved away from the lo-fi aggression of their peers toward a highly stylized 'Dark Metal' sound. This evolution is marked by the inclusion of clean, operatic vocals and complex, epic songwriting that draws from traditional heavy metal and progressive rock. Big Boss's status as the founder of the Czech branch of the Church of Satan informs the band's deep lyrical focus on occultism and philosophy. Critically, they are regarded as a 'cult' band whose influence extends to modern titans like Moonspell and Watain. Their discography, particularly 'The Book' (1999), is celebrated for its atmospheric depth and narrative ambition, blending death, gothic, and heavy metal into a singular, theatrical experience.
