Murky, pharmaceutical-grade industrial rock that feels like a fever dream in a sterile clinic. Sludgy beats meet clinical precision for deep, late-night immersion.
Rx sounds like the internal monologue of a patient in a high-tech recovery ward. It is a dense, claustrophobic blend of industrial textures, dub-influenced rhythms, and clinical atmospheres. The music moves with a deliberate, sludgy pace, favoring thick basslines and intricate percussion over the high-speed aggression often found in the genre. It is a sound that feels both organic and deeply synthetic, like a machine trying to replicate human breathing.
What truly distinguishes the project is the interplay between Martin Atkins' polyrhythmic drumming and Nivek Ogre's uniquely processed vocals. Ogre moves between a paranoid whisper and a distorted snarl, often buried just beneath layers of medical samples and rhythmic noise. This isn't dancefloor industrial; it is a psychological exploration that uses the studio as a laboratory, resulting in a sound that is as much about the space between the notes as the notes themselves.
Start with Bedside Toxicology. It is the definitive statement of the project, capturing a specific moment in the late 90s industrial scene where the focus shifted from the mosh pit to the mind. It is best experienced on high-quality headphones where the subtle panning and textural details can fully envelop the listener.
℞ or Rx was a one-off side project by Skinny Puppy band member Nivek Ogre, in collaboration with Invisible Records founder Martin Atkins. The project was originally called Ritalin, but the name was changed for legal reasons. Rx released an album of industrial rock music, Bedside Toxicology, in 1998.
