Heavy, melodic Spanish metal that balances crushing guitar riffs with introspective baritone vocals. Think Tool's precision met with a dark, romantic rock sensibility.
Sôber is a cornerstone of the Spanish alternative metal scene, formed in Madrid in 1994. Originally performing as Sober Stoned, the band evolved from a grunge-influenced outfit into a sophisticated melodic metal powerhouse.
Their sound is frequently compared to Tool due to their rhythmic complexity and the bass-forward songwriting of frontman Carlos Escobedo, though Sôber lean more heavily into traditional hard rock song structures and gothic-tinged romanticism. The band's commercial breakthrough came with the 2002 album Paradÿsso, which achieved Platinum status in Spain and solidified their position as leaders of the 'Rock en Español' movement of the early 2000s. After a hiatus in the mid-2000s that saw the formation of successful spin-off bands Savia and Skizoo, the group reunited in 2010. They are critically respected for their technical proficiency, particularly the dual-guitar work of Jorge Escobedo and Antonio Bernardini, and their influence can be heard in nearly every Spanish heavy rock band that followed them. Their later work, such as Elegía (2021), shows a move toward more symphonic and atmospheric elements while retaining their signature heavy groove.
