Deep, analog-heavy drum and bass that balances raw warehouse grit with soulful liquid melodies. Perfect for late-night city drives and dark, sub-heavy basements.
S.P.Y creates a sound that feels like a bridge between the golden era of jungle and the polished precision of modern drum and bass. His tracks are defined by a physical sense of weight, anchored by massive, warm sub-bass lines that seem to hum with analog electricity. While the foundations are often dark and industrial, there is a persistent soulful undercurrent, often appearing as ghostly vocal chops or melancholic piano chords that cut through the mechanical noise.
What truly sets him apart is his commitment to texture and 'the dubplate style.' He avoids the clinical, overly digital sound of many contemporaries in favor of a gritty, saturated aesthetic that feels lived-in and authentic. His drums aren't just loud; they have a swing and a snap that suggests a deep reverence for the original breakbeat culture, processed through high-fidelity modern engineering.
Start with 'By Your Side' for a masterclass in soulful liquid dnb, then dive into 'Back To Basics' to hear his more aggressive, floor-focused side. For those who love the heritage of the genre, 'Dubplate Style' offers a perfect modern reimagining of the classic jungle sound.
Carlos Lima, known professionally as S.P.Y, is a Bristol-based Brazilian DJ, record producer and musician from São Paulo, Brazil. He is influenced by genres such as house, UK garage, R&B and the jungle sound. He primarily releases his music through Hospital Records, the UK-based independent drum and bass music label. His DJ name was Spyder, but two months before the release of his first track he had to change it because another producer from America also released an EP under the same name. He left the last three letters out and changed his name to S.P.Y or SPY.
