Salamanda

Salamanda is a Seoul-based experimental electronic duo consisting of Uman Therma (Sala) and Yetsuby (Manda). Emerging from the vibrant South Korean underground scene in the late 2010s, they have become key figures in the contemporary 'ambient-not-ambient' movement.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of 'Fourth World' aesthetics, popularized by Jon Hassell, but updated for the digital age with a focus on transparency, liquid textures, and playful minimalism. Their career arc saw a significant international breakthrough with the 2022 release 'ashbalkum' on the Human Pitch label, which garnered critical acclaim for its imaginative world-building. Critically, they are praised for moving ambient music away from dark, drone-heavy tropes toward a brighter, more whimsical, and percussion-driven palette. They are often linked to the 'New Age revival' and environmental music, though their work contains more rhythmic complexity and IDM influence than traditional New Age.
