Intro

Salvation was a pivotal, if under-recognized, fixture of the Leeds gothic rock and post-punk scene during the mid-to-late 1980s. Formed in 1983, they were closely associated with the 'Merciful Release' circle, the label founded by Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy, which released their debut 12-inch.

This association firmly placed them within the 'Leeds Sound' - characterized by the use of drum machines (the 'Doctor Avalanche' influence), prominent flanged bass, and cavernous production. Throughout their career, they moved from the independent charts to a major label signing with IRS, though internal friction led to an acrimonious split before they could achieve mainstream breakthrough. Their sound evolved from stark, minimalist post-punk to a more polished, melodic gothic pop style that influenced the second wave of the genre. Critics often highlight their ability to merge the industrial grit of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry with the more ethereal, romantic leanings of The Mission. Today, they are a 'collector's band,' highly regarded by enthusiasts of the 1980s UK underground for their consistent atmosphere and sharp songwriting.
