Sammy was an American indie rock duo consisting of Jesse Hartman and Luke Wood, active primarily in the mid-1990s. They are most frequently categorized alongside the 'slacker rock' movement, sharing a significant sonic DNA with Pavement, Sebadoh, and Guided by Voices.
Their debut was released on Steve Shelley's (Sonic Youth) Smells Like Records, which cemented their pedigree within the New York underground. Their sound is characterized by lo-fi production, jagged guitar interplay, and Hartman's deadpan vocal delivery. While they briefly signed to Geffen for their second album, 'Tales of Great Neck Glory,' they remained a cult act, embodying the era's tension between independent ethics and major label interest. The band dissolved shortly after their second release, with Hartman later pursuing solo work as Laptop.
