Sauna Youth

Jagged, high-velocity art-punk with deadpan dual vocals and brittle guitar lines. Restless energy for sharp minds and crowded city streets.

Intro

Sauna Youth sounds like the frantic internal monologue of someone living in a city that never stops moving. It is punk music stripped of its leather-jacket clichés and replaced with a sharp, intellectual restlessness. The guitars are brittle and percussive, cutting through the mix like a serrated blade, while the drums maintain a relentless, almost motorik drive that pushes every song toward a sudden, breathless conclusion.

What truly sets them apart is the vocal interplay between Jen Calleja and Richard Phoenix. Their delivery is often deadpan or shouted in unison, creating a detached yet urgent atmosphere that feels more like a series of observations than a traditional performance. The inclusion of subtle sampler textures adds a layer of modern grime, grounding their garage-punk roots in a contemporary, experimental reality.

Start with the album Distractions. It perfectly captures their ability to balance catchy, surf-influenced melodies with a harsh, post-punk edge. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who wants music that feels as fast as their own thoughts, offering a cathartic outlet for the anxieties of modern life without ever slowing down to wallow in them.

Sauna Youth were a London-based post-punk band formed by ex-members of punk bands The Steal and Captain Everything! in 2009. They released three albums, Dreamlands (2012), Distractions (2015), and Deaths (2018), plus various singles. Members of Sauna Youth also played in the group Monotony, an alter ego of sorts where they all switch instruments. The two bands released a split single on Upset the Rhythm in 2015.
