Savoy Grand

Savoy Grand is a seminal British slowcore outfit formed in Nottingham in 1997, centered around the songwriting of Graham Langley. Emerging during the tail end of the post-rock boom, they eschewed the genre's typical crescendocore tropes in favor of a more skeletal, emotionally raw approach influenced by the late-period work of Talk Talk and the minimalist tension of Slint.

Their early work, particularly the 'Dirty Pillows' mini-album, established them as masters of 'minimalist heartbreak,' earning critical comparisons to the American slowcore movement (Low, Codeine) but with a uniquely British, chamber-folk inflection. Their 2002 debut full-length, 'Burn The Furniture,' expanded their sonic palette with string quartets and subtle electronics, marking their peak of critical acclaim. Despite line-up changes and periods of relative obscurity, the band has maintained a consistent aesthetic of 'live frailty' and extreme dynamic range. They occupy a specific niche in the UK independent scene, bridging the gap between the starkness of 4AD-style dream pop and the intellectual rigor of avant-garde jazz-rock.
