Intro

Scandal is the sound of 1980s defiance, characterized by a razor-sharp blend of New Wave precision and Arena Rock muscle. At the center of it all is Patty Smyth, whose voice possesses a unique, gravelly grit that cuts through dense layers of synthesizers and overdriven guitars. The music feels like a high-speed chase through a neon-lit city, full of urgency and rhythmic snap.

What truly sets them apart is the balance between radio-ready pop sensibilities and a genuine rock edge. While many of their contemporaries leaned into the softer side of synth-pop, Scandal maintained a gritty, guitar-forward approach that felt dangerous yet accessible. The interplay between Zack Smith's melodic guitar work and the driving, staccato keyboard lines created a sonic template that defined the early MTV era.

To experience Scandal at their peak, start with 'The Warrior'. It is the quintessential 80s anthem, showcasing the band's ability to build tension before exploding into one of the most recognizable choruses of the decade. From there, dive into 'Goodbye to You' for a masterclass in power-pop songwriting that remains as infectious today as it was in 1982.

Scandal is an American rock band formed in 1981 by Zack Smith and fronted by Patty Smyth. The band scored heavy rotation classics on MTV with "Goodbye to You" (1982) and "Love's Got a Line on You" (1983), setting the stage for their first full-length album on Columbia Records, that spawned an RIAA-certified platinum hit in both the United States and Canada, with the song "The Warrior", peaking at No. 7 in 1984. The song ended up in Billboard's Top 50 songs for that year.
