Schatrax

Schatrax is the primary alias of Josh Brent, a pivotal figure in the UK's underground electronic scene since the mid-1990s. Operating his own Schatrax Recordings, Brent carved out a niche that bridged the gap between the soulful depth of Detroit techno and the emerging European minimal aesthetic.

His sound identity is characterized by a 'less is more' philosophy, utilizing hardware like the MPC and vintage synths to create tracks that are remarkably durable and timeless. Unlike the high-gloss production of contemporary tech-house, Schatrax releases are celebrated for their grit, tape saturation, and unquantized 'swing' that gives the percussion a lifelike quality. Throughout the late 90s, his numbered EPs became cult artifacts for DJs seeking sophisticated, non-commercial dance music.
