Hyper-polished synth-pop with a whispered, androgynous delivery. Intellectual, crystalline, and impossibly smooth music for deep focus or late-night urban drives.
Scritti Politti sounds like the inside of a high-end digital watch: intricate, perfectly timed, and gleaming with a cold but beautiful precision. Green Gartside’s vocals are a marvel of breathy intimacy, delivered with a soft, androgynous whisper that feels like a secret being shared over a perfectly produced R&B beat. It is pop music that has been scrubbed of all grit until only a shimmering, crystalline essence remains.
What makes them truly distinctive is the friction between the music and the message. While the production is the pinnacle of 80s 'sophisti-pop' - all gated drums, Fairlight samples, and expensive-sounding synths - the lyrics are often dense with philosophical and political subtext. It is perhaps the only music in history that successfully blends the rhythmic sensibilities of Aretha Franklin with the linguistic theories of Jacques Derrida.
For the uninitiated, Cupid & Psyche 85 is the essential entry point. It represents the moment where Gartside’s obsession with the perfect pop song met the cutting edge of 1980s studio technology. Tracks like 'Wood Beez' and 'Perfect Way' offer an immediate melodic sugar high, while the deeper cuts reveal a restless, intellectual spirit that refuses to settle for simple clichés.
Scritti Politti are a British band formed in 1977 in Leeds by singer-songwriter Green Gartside, who is the sole remaining member of the original band. Initially formed as a punk-aligned underground act influenced by leftist politics, they transitioned into a commercial pop music project in the early 1980s, achieving success on the record charts in the UK. The group's most successful album, 1985's Cupid & Psyche 85, spawned three UK Top 20 hits with "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)", "Absolute", and "The Word Girl", and one US Top 20 hit with "Perfect Way". The band's 1988 album Provision peaked in the UK Top 10 and produced a UK Top 20 hit single, "Oh Patti". After releasing two non-album singles in 1991, as well as a collaboration with B.E.F., the band returned in the late 1990s after a seven-year break.
