Sensation represents a pivotal but often overlooked chapter in UK indie history. Formed from the ashes of Soul Family Sensation after the departure of vocalist Jhelissa, the project became the primary vehicle for songwriter Jon Male.
Their 1993 debut, Burger Habit, released on One Little Indian, showcased a sophisticated pop sensibility that stood in stark contrast to the dominant grunge and lo-fi trends of the era. Musically, the band drew heavily from the lineage of literate British pop, incorporating elements of synth-pop, chamber pop, and jangle. Despite critical comparisons to the Pet Shop Boys and The Cure, the project struggled to find a commercial foothold in a market saturated by American alternative rock. Historically, the band is most significant as the precursor to Republica; after Sensation dissolved, Male recruited vocalist Saffron to front a more aggressive, electronic-leaning sound that eventually achieved global success. The later release of Yesterday Things Got Worse provided a window into their developmental process, cementing their status as a cult favorite among collectors of 90s indie-pop rarities.
