Shadows Fall

Shadows Fall is a foundational pillar of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal (NWAHM). Formed in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1996, the band evolved from a raw melodic death metal outfit featuring Philip Labonte into a globally recognized force with the addition of vocalist Brian Fair and virtuoso drummer Jason Bittner.

Their sound identity is a sophisticated blend of 80s thrash (Metallica, Slayer), classic Iron Maiden-esque harmonies, and the melodic death metal sensibilities of In Flames. Critically, they are lauded for maintaining high technical standards, particularly in the guitar and drum departments, which earned them two Grammy nominations. Throughout the 2000s, they were a commercial powerhouse in the underground, with 'The War Within' reaching the Billboard Top 20. Their influence is seen in the bridge they built between the hardcore-leaning metalcore scene and traditional heavy metal, proving that extreme music could achieve mainstream visibility without losing its technical edge or aggression.
