Sharpshooters

Smoky, late-night jazz fused with gritty Seattle boom bap. Dusty vinyl breaks and live horns for rainy city streets and deep crate digging sessions.

Intro

Sharpshooters, comprised of DJ Sureshot and Mr. Supreme, emerged from Seattle's underground hip-hop scene in the early 1990s.

Their identity is rooted in the 'crate digger' culture, born from the duo's reputation for possessing elite record collections spanning funk, soul, and rare breaks. Unlike their contemporaries who relied solely on digital sampling, Sharpshooters pioneered a hybrid approach, blending sampled loops with live session musicians playing horns, bass, and guitar. This resulted in a sound that bridged the gap between the UK's Acid Jazz movement and the US East Coast's Boom Bap tradition. Their 1996 debut, 'Choked Up,' remains a high-water mark for the jazz-rap subgenre, characterized by its moody, atmospheric production and technical percussion. Though their output was sporadic after the early 2000s, they are critically regarded as essential architects of the Pacific Northwest's hip-hop history, influencing the transition toward more organic, instrumental-heavy downtempo music.
