Effervescent R&B that glides over syncopated, sun-drenched grooves. Sophisticated, soulful, and built for golden hour transitions.
Shay Lia makes music that feels like a warm breeze on a humid night. It is R&B at its most fluid, blending the precision of modern electronic production with the organic soul of the 70s. Her voice doesn't fight for space; it floats, using breathy textures and intricate layering to create a sense of effortless intimacy. There is a rhythmic playfulness here that feels deeply connected to her global roots, moving beyond standard pop structures into something more kinetic and alive.
What sets her apart is the 'Kaytranada-adjacent' bounce. While many of her contemporaries lean into the 'sad girl' R&B aesthetic, Shay Lia leans into movement and light. Her tracks are anchored by heavy, syncopated basslines and shimmering synths that invite a gentle, rhythmic sway. It is stylish without being cold, and meticulous without feeling over-engineered. It is the sound of someone who is entirely comfortable in their own skin.
Start with the 'Dangerous' EP to hear her at her most focused. It captures that specific intersection of Montreal's electronic scene and global soul. If you want something more upbeat, 'Funky Thang' showcases her ability to command a groove, while her later work on 'FACETS' shows a more mature, experimental side of her songwriting.
Shanice Dileita Mohamed (born on September 8th 1993), known as Shay Lia, is a French-Djiboutian musician based in Montreal, Quebec.
