Intro

Shining (NOR) represents one of the most radical stylistic evolutions in modern European music. Founded in 1999 by Jørgen Munkeby as an acoustic jazz quartet, the band initially garnered acclaim within the Norwegian jazz scene for their technical proficiency and experimental leanings.

However, the mid-2000s saw a sharp pivot toward electric instrumentation and progressive rock, culminating in the 2010 release 'Blackjazz'. This album effectively birthed a new subgenre, fusing the improvisational ferocity of Ornette Coleman with the industrial weight of Nine Inch Nails and the technical complexity of Dillinger Escape Plan. Munkeby’s role as a multi-instrumentalist is central, specifically his use of the saxophone as a primary lead instrument within an extreme metal context. Critically, they are viewed as innovators who successfully bridged the gap between the conservatory and the mosh pit. While later work like 'Animal' moved toward a more streamlined, anthemic hard rock sound, their legacy remains rooted in their ability to synthesize disparate sonic extremes into a cohesive, high-energy vocabulary.
