Intro

SIG occupies a unique space in the Finnish musical landscape, blending the rebellious spirit of late-seventies punk with the melodic sensibilities of sixties pop and the emerging textures of new wave. Their sound is defined by Matti Inkinen's approachable, slightly nasal vocals and a reliance on bright, often toy-like synthesizer melodies that give the music a distinctive suburban charm. It feels like a sunny afternoon in a small town where everyone is in on the joke, yet the emotions remain surprisingly sincere.

What truly sets them apart is their mastery of the 'ironic pop' angle. While many of their contemporaries in the Suomirock scene leaned into heavy angst or traditional folk-rock, SIG embraced a kitschy, almost naive aesthetic that masked sharp observations about Finnish life. The music is catchy enough for a wedding but carries a wink that suggests they are gently poking fun at the very genres they inhabit. It is the sound of a band that refused to take themselves too seriously while accidentally writing some of the most enduring melodies in their country's history.

To understand their impact, start with 'Tiina menee naimisiin' or 'Vuosisadan rakkaustarina.' These tracks showcase their ability to craft massive hooks out of simple, analog arrangements. It is essential listening for anyone exploring the transition from punk to pop in Northern Europe or those who appreciate music that feels like a warm, slightly faded polaroid of a simpler time.

SIG was a pop band from Raisio, Finland, formed in 1978. The lead singer of the band was Matti Inkinen. The breakthrough song SIG was "Tiina menee naimisiin" (Tiina is getting married). The most famous songs from SIG are “Vuosisadan rakkaustarina“ (English: The lovestory of the century) and “Hyvää syntymäpäivää“ (English: Happy birthday). Original SIG broke down in 1987. The comeback album of SIG was "Suomalainen pop-levy" (A Finnish Pop Album). The lead singer of SIG Matti Inkinen died in 2009.
