Intro

Silk Route was a pivotal Indian band active from 1997 to 2002, emerging as a sophisticated alternative to the high-energy 'Indipop' boom of the era. Formed by Mohit Chauhan, Kem Trivedi, Atul Mittal, and Kenny Puri, the band carved out a niche by blending Western folk-rock sensibilities (influenced by Simon & Garfunkel and Dire Straits) with Indian melodic structures and Pahadi folk influences.

Their debut album, Boondein (1998), was a massive critical and commercial success, largely driven by the iconic single 'Dooba Dooba,' which utilized an innovative underwater music video and a minimalist acoustic arrangement. A key element of their sonic identity was the use of the 17th-century European recorder, played by Trivedi, which provided a distinct, pastoral texture rarely heard in South Asian pop. Despite a second well-received album, Pehchan (2000), the band dissolved in 2002. Lead singer Mohit Chauhan subsequently transitioned into a highly successful career as a Bollywood playback singer, though he retained the soulful, breathy style developed during his Silk Route years. The band remains a cult favorite, credited with introducing a 'mountain-folk' aesthetic to mainstream Indian consciousness.
