Skating Polly is a Tacoma-based trio, originally from Oklahoma City, founded by step-siblings Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse. Emerging in 2009 as a duo of pre-teens, they gained early mentorship from punk royalty like Exene Cervenka (X).
Their sound, which they label 'ugly-pop,' is a sophisticated evolution of grunge, punk, and indie pop, characterized by alternating lead vocals and a multi-instrumental approach where members frequently swap roles. The 2017 addition of Kurtis Mayo on drums allowed the founding duo to deepen their melodic arrangements on bass and guitar. Their career arc shows a transition from minimalist, lo-fi beginnings to the expansive, Brad Wood-produced double album 'Chaos County Line' (2023). Critically, they are praised for their 'raw' authenticity and ability to bridge the gap between the 90s riot grrrl movement and contemporary indie rock. They occupy a unique cultural space as a bridge between classic punk influences (The Ramones, Nirvana) and modern alternative sensibilities, maintaining a fiercely independent 'Pollyholic' fanbase.
