Skeletal Family

Driving basslines and flanged guitars meet theatrical vocals. High-energy gothic rock that feels like a midnight chase through a fog-heavy industrial town.

Intro

Formed in Keighley, West Yorkshire in 1982, Skeletal Family emerged as a pivotal force in the second wave of British gothic rock. Taking their name from a David Bowie track, they evolved from the ashes of The Elements to create a sound that was more aggressive than dream pop but more melodic than pure deathrock.

Their early success was marked by topping the UK Indie Charts with 'Burning Oil', famously outperforming peers like The Smiths. This era was defined by their association with The Sisters of Mercy and Siouxsie and the Banshees, solidifying their place in the 'Batcave' pantheon. Musically, the band is characterized by Stan Greenwood's flanged guitar work and Roger Nowell's prominent, driving basslines. The departure of original vocalist Anne Hurst in 1985 led to a shift toward a more polished, commercial sound under Katrina Phillips, though their legacy remains rooted in their mid-80s darkwave output. They remain a staple of the international gothic festival circuit, representing the bridge between northern English post-punk and the global goth subculture.
