Skitliv

Bleak, slow-motion black metal that feels like a heavy fog. Dissonant, misanthropic, and deeply atmospheric for moments of total isolation.

Intro

Skitliv sounds like the physical manifestation of a psychological breakdown. It is slow, agonizing, and thick with a sense of impending doom that never quite resolves. Unlike the frantic speed of traditional black metal, this project drags its feet through the mud, utilizing sludge and noise to create a suffocating wall of sound that feels both ancient and industrial. The guitars are tuned to a frequency that vibrates with anxiety, while the percussion feels like a distant, rhythmic heartbeat in a dying body.

What makes Skitliv truly distinctive is the vocal performance of Maniac, which shifts from haunting whispers to unhinged, throat-tearing shrieks. The collaboration with Niklas Kvarforth adds a layer of melodic cruelty, where beautiful guitar lines are often interrupted by jarring feedback or dissonant chords. It is music that prioritizes the 'vibe' of misery over technical showmanship, creating a sonic space that is genuinely uncomfortable to inhabit but impossible to ignore for those seeking catharsis.

Start with Skandinavisk Misantropi if you want to hear the full realization of their 'black-doom' vision. It is a dense, challenging record that features guest appearances from across the extreme metal spectrum, serving as a perfect gateway into their world of structured chaos and existential dread.

Skitliv (Norwegian and Swedish for "shit life") is a Norwegian black-doom metal band founded in 2005 by former Mayhem vocalist Maniac and Shining vocalist Niklas Kvarforth. Maniac describes the project as "firmly rooted in black metal" but much darker and more brooding than anything he has done before.
