Skylab was a highly influential Anglo-Japanese electronic collective formed in 1993, acting as a bridge between the UK trip-hop scene and the Japanese avant-garde. The group featured Howie B (famed for his work with Massive Attack and Bjork), Mat Ducasse, and the Japanese duo Toshio Nakanishi and Masayuki Kudo (founding members of Major Force).
Their sound identity is defined by a sophisticated blend of downtempo beats, dub-heavy bass, and experimental sound design. Their 1994 debut, #1, is widely considered a cult classic of the trip-hop era, though it pushed further into ambient and 'lowercase' territory than most of its peers. The 1999 follow-up, #2, expanded their palette into more psychedelic and cinematic realms. Critically, Skylab is revered for their 'studio-as-instrument' approach, prioritizing texture and atmosphere over traditional song structure. Their influence can be heard in the more experimental fringes of downtempo and the evolution of ambient techno. The death of Nakanishi in 2017 marked the end of an era for this unique cross-cultural collaboration.
