Soap

Soap was a primary recording alias for British electronic producer Paul Doherty during the mid-1990s. The project is most significantly associated with the Frankfurt-based label Harthouse, founded by Sven Vath, which was a central pillar of the global techno explosion.

Soap's sound identity is defined by a fusion of UK rhythmic sensibility and German structural precision. His 1995 magnum opus, 'Dumb Funk Resistance', exemplifies the 'Harthouse sound': long-form, evolving tracks built on analog hardware sequences, 303-style acid lines, and a specific emphasis on the 'funk' within the machine. Critically, Soap is viewed as a bridge between the early trance-techno hybridity of the early 90s and the more austere, loop-based minimalism that would dominate the decade's end. While the project was relatively short-lived, its inclusion in the Harthouse catalog ensures its status among techno historians and vinyl collectors as a prime example of the era's hardware-driven innovation. The music remains highly functional for DJ sets while possessing enough textural depth for home listening.
