Founded in 1990 by Rich Walker following his departure from the grindcore pioneers Sore Throat, Solstice represents a radical pivot toward the 'Epic Doom' sound pioneered by Candlemass. Based in West Yorkshire, the band became the standard-bearers for a specifically English brand of doom that incorporates elements of traditional heavy metal (Iron Maiden) and pagan folk.
Walker's influence extends beyond the music through his Miskatonic Foundation label, which curated a specific aesthetic of 'true' metal.
