Solvent

Warm analog synths and melancholic robot vocals that bridge the gap between 80s pop and modern IDM. Intricate, elegant, and deeply nostalgic electronic music.

Intro

Solvent sounds like the interior of a vintage synthesizer come to life. It is music built from the warm, slightly unstable hum of analog oscillators, where every melody feels like a fragile transmission from a more optimistic past. The textures are crisp and clean but possess a human-like vulnerability, often manifesting as bittersweet lead lines that stick in your head long after the track ends.

What truly distinguishes Jason Amm's work is his refusal to choose between the dancefloor and the bedroom. While the rhythms often nod to classic electro and techno-pop, the harmonic language is rooted in a very specific kind of introverted melancholy. It is 'robot music' with a heavy heart, avoiding the irony of electroclash in favor of a sincere, almost obsessive devotion to the craft of hardware synthesis.

Start with 'Apples & Synthesizers' to hear the perfect balance of his pop sensibilities and intricate production. It serves as a definitive gateway into his world of melodic machines and serves as a masterclass in how to make electronic music feel deeply personal without losing its synthetic edge.

Solvent is the stage name used by electronic producer and remixer Jason Amm. Although his music has been included in the electroclash movement (as his track "My Radio" appeared on Ghostly International's 2002 compilation album Disco Nouveau), many of Solvent's tracks fall under the intelligent dance music or electropop genres. Jason Amm's music is often associated with its strong influence from early 1980s artists such as Soft Cell and Depeche Mode, but the influence is much wider, spanning the last three decades. With partner Gregory DeRocher (who records his own music using the pseudonym Lowfish), Amm owned and operated the Suction record label until its demise in 2008. This was partly because 12" records were no longer being manufactured in Canada, leading to costly imports from the USA. Aside from tracks appearing on various-artists compilations, Amm has released several full-length albums using the Solvent moniker.
