Bright, melodic indie rock with effortless three-part harmonies. It feels like a sunny afternoon catch-up with old friends who happen to be expert songwriters.
This is music that feels like a long-distance friendship finally manifesting in the same room. Built on the rekindled creative spark between Juliana Hatfield and Freda Love Smith, the sound is defined by its breezy, unforced energy. It avoids the heavy distortion or angst often associated with 90s alternative, opting instead for a clean, shimmering palette that highlights the trio's natural melodic instincts.
What makes the project distinctive is the democratic vocal approach. While Hatfield's signature breathy delivery is a cornerstone, the addition of Heidi Gluck and Freda Love Smith creates a three-part harmonic density that leans into power-pop and chamber-folk territory. The instrumentation is varied but never cluttered, occasionally incorporating harmonica or lap steel to add a touch of Americana warmth to their indie rock foundation.
Start with their debut album, Feel It. It captures the spontaneous magic of a band that formed and recorded in a single week. The songs are short, punchy, and incredibly infectious, serving as a perfect introduction to their brand of sophisticated, lighthearted pop-rock.
Some Girls is an American indie rock trio formed in 2001, and composed of Juliana Hatfield (guitar and vocals), Heidi Gluck (electric bass guitar, keyboards, harmonica, lap steel guitar and vocals) and Freda Love Smith (drums and vocals). Hatfield and Love Smith knew each other from the Blake Babies and wanted to write songs together. The group's songs are generally melodic, upbeat, and lighthearted. The group released their first album, Feel It, in 2003 and toured the United States. Their second album, Crushing Love, was released in July 2006 on Koch Records. The release includes a DVD containing tour and studio footage.
