High-octane Australian indie rock with a soulful, raspy edge. Big choruses and gritty guitars for coastal drives and festival mosh pits.
Something With Numbers emerged from the New South Wales Central Coast in 2001, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the Australian indie-punk explosion of the mid-2000s. Originally influenced by the skate-punk movement (as evidenced by their name's nod to Blink-182), they evolved rapidly into a sophisticated indie rock outfit.
Their breakthrough came with 2006's 'Perfect Distraction', which saw them transition from the indie Below Par Records to wider commercial acclaim. The single 'Apple of the Eye (Lay Me Down)' became a Triple J staple, cementing their place in the Australian alternative canon. Their sound is characterized by a blend of melodic punk, indie rock, and what critics termed 'soul rock', largely due to frontman Jake Grigg's raspy, expressive vocal delivery. They occupied a unique space between the pop-punk of the era and the more serious indie-rock movements, touring with both international heavyweights like Panic! At The Disco and local legends like Trial Kennedy. Their later work, specifically 'Engineering the Soul', displayed increased production values and a more expansive sonic palette before their eventual hiatus and subsequent sporadic activity.
