Soulsister is the most successful Belgian export of the late 1980s blue-eyed soul movement, centered on the partnership of Jan Leyers and Paul Michiels. Formed in 1986, the duo combined Leyers' background in rock (Beri-Beri) with Michiels' experience in the British-Belgian rock group Octopus.
Their sound identity is characterized by a sophisticated blend of Motown-inspired R&B and contemporary pop-rock, peaking with the 1988 international hit 'The Way To Your Heart.' This track remains a benchmark for European soul-pop, even charting on the US Billboard Hot 100. Throughout the early 90s, the band evolved into a more guitar-oriented rock-soul outfit under the name Leyers, Michiels and SoulSister, particularly on the album 'Heat.' Critically, they are respected for their high-caliber songwriting and Michiels' distinctive raspy vocals. After a hiatus starting in 1995, their 2007 reunion solidified their status as legacy icons in the Benelux region, influencing a generation of Flemish pop artists like Clouseau and De Kreuners through their high production standards and melodic accessibility.
