Bright, interlocking instrumental jams that feel like a sunrise. A joyful blend of jazz improvisation and clean post-rock precision for focused, happy days.
Special Others create music that feels like a deep, refreshing breath of morning air. While technically rooted in jazz and post-rock, their sound avoids the typical tropes of those genres; there is no academic coldness or brooding melancholy here. Instead, you get shimmering guitar lines that weave around warm electric piano melodies, all anchored by a rhythm section that is both incredibly tight and effortlessly fluid.
What makes them distinctive is their 'jam band' DNA filtered through a Japanese sensibility for melody and structure. Their songs often evolve through patient, interlocking patterns that build toward euphoric peaks without ever feeling aggressive. It is complex music that refuses to be difficult, opting instead for a sunny, organic optimism that is rare in instrumental circles.
Start with the album 'Good Morning' to understand their core appeal. It perfectly captures that transition from a quiet start to a vibrant, energetic day. If you enjoy the technicality of math rock but want something that feels more like a celebration than a puzzle, this is your gateway.
Special Others is a Japanese band that blends improvised jazz with post-rock influences. Their lyrics on non-instrumental songs mix English and Japanese. The members of the band met in high school and formed the group in 1995. They began performing in 2000 and their first major release, Indy-Ann, remained in the CRJ-tokyo charts for seven weeks. Their first release on NMNL Records was the EP Ben which entered the Tower Records Shibuya indie chart at No. 1, and No. 2 in the national Tower Records chart. After releasing their second EP, Uncle John, in June 2005, the band played at the Fuji Rock Festival in July. In June 2006, they released Idol, which was followed by a performance at Daikanyama UNIT in July, the release Aims at Tower Records in October, and the release of their first full album, Good Morning, on November 22. The band toured with Asian Kung-Fu Generation from late 2006, with guest appearances at five performances across Japan.
