Spectrum — Cassette

Intro

Spectrum serves as the primary creative vehicle for Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom) following the acrimonious dissolution of Spacemen 3. While his former bandmate Jason Pierce pursued the widescreen gospel-rock of Spiritualized, Kember used Spectrum to dive deeper into the minimalist, electronic, and drone-based elements of the Spacemen 3 sound.

The project's early work, particularly 'Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)', maintained a tether to 60s-influenced garage psych, but quickly evolved into a more abstract exploration of analog synthesis and repetitive structures. Kember's work is defined by a 'less is more' philosophy, often centering entire tracks around a single oscillating frequency or a simple, circular guitar figure. Throughout the 1990s, Spectrum collaborated with other experimental luminaries like Silver Apples and Jessamine, further cementing Kember's role as a bridge between the classic psychedelic era and the modern electronic underground. Critically, Spectrum is viewed as a purist's pursuit of 'perfect sound,' prioritizing texture and sonic purity over commercial accessibility or traditional songcraft.
