Intro

Formed in 1995 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Staind emerged as a cornerstone of the post-grunge and alternative metal movements. Their early career was significantly influenced by a chance encounter with Fred Durst, which led to their signing with Flip Records and a production partnership with Terry Date.

While initially lumped into the nu-metal scene due to their timing and heavy instrumentation, the band quickly distinguished themselves through Aaron Lewis's confessional songwriting and a lack of hip-hop elements, drawing closer comparisons to Alice in Chains than Korn. Their 2001 album, Break the Cycle, marked a massive cultural shift, debuting at number one and cementing the 'acoustic-heavy ballad' as a staple of 21st-century rock radio. Over eight studio albums, the band has navigated a path from the raw, abrasive textures of Tormented to the polished, melodic anthems of Chapter V. Despite Lewis's later pivot to country music and Mike Mushok's work with Saint Asonia, the band remains a definitive voice for a generation of listeners seeking catharsis through themes of depression, addiction, and personal redemption.
