Emerging alongside peers on labels like B12 and Peacefrog, Pickton helped define a sound that merged the rhythmic DNA of Detroit techno with the pastoral, ambient sensibilities of British electronic music.

His work is characterized by a sophisticated use of analog hardware, featuring rich, polyphonic synth pads and intricate, often syncopated percussion that avoids the four-to-the-floor clichés of club music. Throughout his career, Pickton has operated under numerous pseudonyms, including Phenomyna and Soul 223, each exploring different facets of soulful, melodic electronics. His influence is significant within the IDM and ambient techno communities, evidenced by his selection by Autechre for All Tomorrow's Parties and his inclusion on seminal Mo' Wax compilations.
