Steve Hillage is a pivotal figure in the evolution of British experimental music, serving as a bridge between the 1970s Canterbury scene and the 1990s electronic dance movement. Emerging from the group Khan and later becoming a central member of the psychedelic collective Gong, Hillage developed a highly idiosyncratic guitar style characterized by heavy use of echo, delay, and the 'glissando' technique (inspired by Daevid Allen).
His solo career, particularly albums like 'Fish Rising' and 'L', established him as a premier space-rock architect. In the late 70s, his work on 'Rainbow Dome Musick' anticipated the ambient house movement by over a decade. This connection was solidified in the 1990s when he formed System 7 with Miquette Giraudy, collaborating with The Orb and becoming a fixture in the techno and trance scenes. Critically, he is respected for his technical fluidity and his role as a producer for artists like Simple Minds and It's Immaterial.
