Intro

Steve Lukather's music is the sound of absolute professional mastery. It carries the weight of a thousand studio sessions, resulting in a sonic profile that is incredibly polished yet never feels sterile. His guitar tone is thick and liquid, often drenched in tasteful stereo delays and smooth overdrive that makes every note feel like it's glowing. Whether he's leaning into a hard rock riff or a complex jazz-fusion run, there is an underlying warmth and 'LA cool' that anchors the experience.

What truly sets him apart is the phrasing. Unlike many shredders who focus on linear speed, Lukather plays with a vocal-like quality, utilizing wide, dramatic bends and a very specific, rhythmic vibrato. You can hear the influence of Steely Dan's harmonic complexity mixed with the fire of Jimi Hendrix. His solo work often features sophisticated chord changes that would baffle a standard rock player, yet he delivers them with the swagger of a stadium veteran.

For those new to his solo catalog, Bridges or Candyman offer the perfect entry point. They showcase his ability to craft memorable pop-rock hooks while leaving plenty of room for the jaw-dropping instrumental excursions that made him a legend among guitarists. It is music for people who appreciate the craft of the instrument as much as the song itself.

Steven Lee Lukather (born October 21, 1957) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, arranger, and record producer, best known as the sole continuous founding member of the rock band Toto. His reputation as a skilled guitarist led to a steady flow of session work beginning in the 1970s that has since established him as a prolific session musician, recording guitar tracks for more than 1,500 albums spanning a broad array of artists and genres. He has also contributed to albums and hit singles as a songwriter, arranger, and producer. Notably, Lukather played guitar on Boz Scaggs's albums Down Two Then Left (1977) and Middle Man (1980), and was a prominent contributor to Michael Jackson's Thriller (1982). Lukather has released nine solo albums, the latest of which, Bridges, was released in June 2023. He has stated George Harrison is the reason he started playing guitar. Influenced by blues-rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page and jazz fusion players such as Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin, Lukather is known for a "melodic and intense" playing style. He is also recognized for his efficiency in the studio, often recording tracks in one take using minimal sound processing. While he once used many guitar effects in the studio and on stage, he now frequently disparages such practice and instead advocates cleaner tones and minimal studio processing. Lukather primarily plays a signature electric guitar manufactured by Ernie Ball Music Man bearing his nickname, Luke. He also plays Yamaha and Ovation Adamas series acoustic–electric guitars.
