Rhythmic, idiosyncratic rock that trades stadium anthems for intimate, funk-inflected grooves. A masterclass in the art of the subtle, off-kilter guitar hook.
Stone Gossard's solo work is the sound of a stadium architect retreating to a private workshop to build something small, strange, and beautiful. While his day job involves some of the biggest riffs in rock history, his solo output is defined by a loose, almost conversational rhythmic sensibility. It feels like a warm analog recording of a rainy afternoon, where the focus is on the 'pocket' and the way two guitars can dance around each other without ever stepping on toes.
What makes this music distinctive is the tension between Gossard's heavy grunge pedigree and his deep love for funk and Neil Young. You won't find the soaring vocal histrionics of his main band here; instead, you get a vulnerable, deadpan vocal delivery that prioritizes honesty over polish. The songs are often built on angular, syncopated grooves that feel slightly behind the beat, creating a restless but relaxed energy that is entirely unique to his writing style.
Start with 'Bayleaf' to hear the definitive version of this sound. It is an album that rewards repeat listens, revealing hidden layers of percussion and strange harmonic choices that you might miss on the first pass. It is perfect for those who want the DNA of the Seattle sound stripped of its angst and replaced with a curious, experimental spirit.
