Story of the Year emerged from the St. Louis scene as a pivotal bridge between the late-90s nu-metal/skate-punk era and the mid-2000s emo/post-hardcore boom.
Originally performing as Big Blue Monkey, the band refined their sound into a more melodic, anthem-driven style that culminated in their 2003 major-label debut, Page Avenue. Produced by John Feldmann, this record became a cornerstone of the genre, blending the technicality of melodic hardcore with the accessibility of alternative rock. Throughout their career, they have navigated shifts in the industry, moving from major labels to Epitaph and eventually independent crowd-funding, all while maintaining a reputation for high-intensity live performances characterized by backflips and synchronized stage moves. Their sound identity is built on Dan Marsala's versatile vocals and the sophisticated guitar interplay between Ryan Phillips and Philip Sneed.
