Intro

Strangefolk emerged from the fertile Burlington, Vermont music scene of the early 1990s, a community famously defined by Phish but populated by a distinct wave of 'grassroots' jam acts. Strangefolk distinguished themselves through a 'folk-first' philosophy, blending the acoustic sensibilities of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young with the improvisational structures of the Grateful Dead.

The band's classic lineup featured the dual songwriting perspectives of Reid Genauer and Jon Trafton, whose contrasting styles - one more traditional and narrative, the other more rock-oriented and experimental - provided a unique internal tension. Their annual 'Garden of Eden' festival became a cornerstone of the Northeast jam scene, cementing their status as a community-driven act. Despite Genauer's departure in the early 2000s to form Assembly of Dust, the band's legacy as pioneers of 'Americana-jam' remains intact. They are critically regarded as one of the few bands from the 90s jam boom to successfully prioritize vocal arrangements and concise songwriting alongside extended improvisation.
