Deep sub-bass grooves meet smoky jazz trumpet and ethereal vocals. A cinematic blend of live dub and late-night soul that feels like a slow-motion city at 3am.
Submotion Orchestra sounds like the intersection of a dark, rain-slicked alleyway and a high-end jazz lounge. The music is anchored by a massive, physical low-end that draws directly from UK dubstep culture, but it is dressed in the sophisticated textures of neo-soul and contemporary jazz. Ruby Wood's vocals float above the heavy production like a ghost, providing a human, vulnerable counterpoint to the deep, tectonic shifts of the rhythm section.
What truly sets them apart is their identity as a live seven-piece ensemble. While many of their peers rely on programmed loops, Submotion Orchestra brings a breathing, organic quality to electronic music. You can hear the physical strike of the drums and the metallic breath of the trumpet, which creates a sense of space and scale that feels almost architectural. It is music that manages to be both intimate enough for headphones and expansive enough for a cathedral.
Start with their debut album, Finest Hour. It perfectly captures the 'Leeds sound' of the early 2010s, balancing the aggressive weight of dub with melodic beauty. Tracks like 'All Yours' serve as the perfect gateway, showcasing how they can turn a heavy bassline into something deeply romantic and haunting.
Submotion Orchestra are a seven piece band formed in 2009 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. They are influenced by dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub. Their debut LP Finest Hour was released in 2011 on Exceptional Records. They have toured and performed all over the UK, Europe and worldwide, including festival shows at The Big Chill, Latitude, Glastonbury, Outlook, Bestival, and in Thailand at Wonderfruit. They have released five full-length albums and five EPs.
